OUR STAFF

Our faculties represent a wide range of contemporary approaches to architecture and design. They play a significant role in pushing the boundaries and motivate students to inculcate thoughts that are beyond conventions. Among its members are renowned professors, practitioners, and critics who have devoted their carriers to investigate the broad concerns that can be integrated into an overall understanding of our built and natural environments. Profile

Nirav Hirpara the recipient for Suryakant Patel Gold medal for academic performance from Institute of Environmental Architecture at Vallabh Vidhyanagar. Currently serves as a professor and the director of School of Architecture, Vadodara Design Academy since 2006. Before he founded VDA, he was actively involved with teaching at Institute of Environmental architecture at Vallabh Vidhyanagar for several years following which he became the academic director at National School of Interior Design at Rajkot.

His teaching areas include construction courses, design studios, advance structures and services, history of architecture and professional practice. His professional works span over 400 designed projects that include, hospitals, schools and colleges, housing, master planning and landscape for large projects, residences, offices and commercial buildings. He has received several accolades and awards for architectural services rendered by him for the benefit of the society from the government as well as other international organizations.

His vision for an architecture school in the early 2000's has manifested into a thoughtful and an energetic platform for architects and practitioners to participate and keep up with the academia as it progresses with the pace of time. The research carried out with alternative building technologies and his vision for a new school was fairly carried out by the community building and experimenting for itself. VDA students are proud ambassadors of CHHAT which is a "one of its kind" initiative.

Profile

Prof. DV Ekbote is a senior architect and academician with over 40 years of experience and expertise in the industry as well as the academia. He has been with VDA since 2008 and currently holds the honorary position for Design Chair and has a strong influence over the quality of education provided at VDA. He has also taught at other institutes across the country including CEPT, MSU and IED. In the 60’s Prof. Ekbote was an associate architect at Atelier Talati following which he became the town planning officer for GIDC, Ahmedabad. In the early 70’s he has also been the Senior Architect on site for American Maestro, Architect Louis Kahn for the IIM campus in Ahmedabad after which he became a senior project Manager for Mbanefo and Associates in Nigeria for a few years.

Prof. Ekbote has worked with several architects on competition projects and has also lead publication projects such as a monograph on Vernacular architecture of India. He had established a collaborative design firm based in Ahmedabad while he was teaching at CEPT and later moved to Vadodara and practiced by himself. Since then he has numerous completed projects in the city of Vadodara. Prof. Ekbote is a connoisseur of Indian classical music, literature and theatre. He is currently the faculty for design studios from 3 rd to 6 th semesters where he conducts the design exercises related to context, climate, architectural detailing and technical drawings.

Profile

Khevna Mistry graduated as architect from Sarvajanik College of Engineering and Technology, Surat and pursued her master’s degree in Urban Planning from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.

In the initial years of her career, she worked with several architectural and planning firms in Gujarat followed by associating with the SPV for JnNURM in Urban Development Department, Government of Gujarat at Gandhinagar. With widespread experience in architecture and planning, Prof. Mistry established her own firm ‘SAMANVAY’ in Vadodara that serves in the field of urbanism, architecture, interior design and visual arts; and further started teaching as visiting lecturer in Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Urban and Regional Planning programs at VDA and MSU.

Cumulating 15 years of expertise, she is actively engaged in academics as a full-time faculty at School of Architecture, Vadodara Design Academy. Her teaching area includes housing, urban design, history, design theory and research methodology. Investigating into prevailing socio-economic and environmental concerns in urban context and its implications on architecture of the place as well as on overall built environment is her quest. She has taken up various experimental approaches in her studios and guided students to come up with innovative and futuristic solutions for the same and to document them as structured studies.

Profile

Bela Hirpara is an associate professor with a teaching experience of over a decade. She is also the member of the management committee of the Amikrupa Education Trust that runs the institution. Her diverse roles from academics to management gives her the edge to smoothen out the processes of administration that are directly connected to the academics. She is a key member in the VDA community with interesting academic focuses on technical drawings, design for residences, small commercials and public places. Bela has been a part of the thesis committee that regulates the capstone projects done at the institute.

She is also the proprietor of Vastu Architects, a firm she established with Architect Nirav Hirpara in 1989. She is one of the founding members of the institution and has been on board since its inception. Graduated from Institute of Environmental Design, her practice has over 200 completed projects, varying from hospitals, schools and colleges, housing, master planning for large townships, residences, offices and commercial buildings. She has received several accolades and awards for architectural services rendered by her for the benefit of the society from the government as well as other organizations.

Ar. Mrunal Vijaykumar Patel, is the principal architect of the firm Architecture Organism, at Anand. He completed his B.Arch studies at School Of Architecture, Vadodara Design Academy while it was affiliated with Gujarat University and continued his education at New York Film Academy, where he went through an intensive diploma course under film making program.

He has been a student leader and Unit Secretary (National Association of Students of Architecture, INDIA) for Vadodara Design Academy and was the Secretary for hosting zonal convention at Vadodara where he got word of appreciation from various international architects, Ar. Balkrishna Doshi, Ar. Gerard Da Cunha, Ar. Nimish patel, Ar. Karan Grover who were also part of the convention. A team player with excellent communication skills and academic qualifications, easy going by nature and able to get along with both colleagues and clients. Mrunal’s academic inclination is very close to the aspects of detailing, construction and professional practice. He is a young faculty who pushes the students to their boundaries and gets the best out of them.

Anisha Parikh has completed her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute, Vasad in the year 2013. She joined as a assistant professor from May 2017 in Vadodara Design Academy. Before joining academics she worked as Junior Architect for several firms in Ahmedabad and Vadodara. Currently along with being actively involved with VDA, she is working on her own as a freelancer Architect doing various architectural and Interior design projects.

Her teaching areas include construction courses, history of architecture, building regulation and architectural graphic techniques. Along with architecture and academics she is a travel buff, she loves to explore new culture and traditions of different cities and places.

Chintan Desai, Graduated from Vadodara Design Academy. Currently serves as an Asst. professor at VDA since January 2018. Before he joined VDA, he was actively involved with teaching at Shantaben Manubhai Patel School of Studies & Research in Architecture and Interior Design at Vallabh Vidhyanagar for one semester. He now also runs his own architecture practice Sattva Shilp Architects in Vadodara, prior to which he also worked with Ar. Rahul Dalvi for over two years. Sarjan Dalal a graduate from School of Architecture, Vadodara Design Academy, Vadodara. He Extensively worked with senior Prof. Datta ekbote and Prof. Neelkanth Chhaya. Currently serves the alma mater as an assistant professor. With an Interest in field of Conservation and Regeneration, he has worked on various projects of conservation at Vadodara and currently an active member of Vadodara Heritage Cell. Being an Alumni of VDA, Sarjan is also associated with the Centre for Human Habitat and Alternative Technology and assists in leading design-build workshops in Buildathon.

Ar. Mishal is an alumni of Vadodara Design Academy. Apart from his Academic achievement he has been actively involved in many design workshops, research and documentation programs under the mentorship of eminent teachers & professionals. He has done his internship at Sangath lead by Dr. B V Doshi’s Studio, wherein he got
exposed to the subtleties of architecture in terms of design approach and its practical execution. Since then he has been involved in teaching at his alma mater. Along the course of teaching he has been involved in national and international Study tours, documentation programs and has mentored a design workshop alongside prof.

Anagh bali

Profile

Anagh Bali is a graduate from Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University. After completing his thesis on the making and evolution of the indigenous architecture of a Nicobarese village, he has been practicing independently as an architect since January 2017. Having previously worked at Bambooroo Architecture in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a design team member and project execution supervisor in 2012-2013, he has developed a specialization in bamboo and earth construction and alternative construction technologies. Anagh has been applying his knowledge of construction through a design-build approach to architecture to create sustainable, contextual and innovative projects.

His academic inclinations have brought him into the field of teaching, where he has been involved in foundation courses like Basic Design and Architectural Design Studio for first year architecture students at Vadodara Design Academy. Anagh has also been involved in conducting workshops on bamboo and earth construction, both in Thailand with Bambooroo Architecture and at VDA, using his approach to professional practice as a means to enrich the process of hands-on learning.

In parallel to his education in Architecture, he has also trained as a professional SCUBA diver, holding a Divemaster status and is a qualified classical guitarist certified Grade 4 by Trinity College London. His other passions include sports and outdoor adventure activities.

Sapan Hirpara

Profile

Sapan is an alumnus from Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University. Quirky, enthusiastic and witty methods of teaching and working with students has helped him establish a special connection with them which enables him to take charge and work with the students unlike other faculties. He has a special interest in innovation in architectural detailing and working hands on with alternative construction materials. Sapan completed his six-month training at Shigeru Ban Architects in Tokyo where he worked on several projects from concept to site works followed by a short internship at Atelier Bow-wow in Shinjuku. He is an avid follower of contemporary architecture and likes to participate in competitions, one of which was the Buckminster Fuller Challenge 2016.

He also has an experience of working in Bambooro, a construction company specialized in bamboo construction in Chaing Mai, Thailand. His research thesis at CEPT focused on Detailing in paper tube Architecture, which has been the start point for his adventure with design-build projects. Sapan has been the project in charge for Bholu-14, the anganwadi built for slum children in Sabarmati Ahmedabad, and 3 separate geodesic domes at Junagadh, Jaipur and Vadodara. Since his association with VDA, Sapan has been one of the co-founders and faculty in-charge for BUILDATHON, a series of workshops hosted by VDA every year.

Smit Modi

Smit Modi is a Graduate of CEPT University and the recipient of Renzo Piano Foundation Scholarship (Year 2013) that bagged him an opportunity to intern at Renzo Piano Building workshop in Genoa, Italy. He is also one of the eight Finalist of Ethos Transparence 11.0, Nationals. An experience of a Workshop on the historic neighborhoods of Nepal inspired him to dig deeper into the subject, eventually sublimating into his research thesis ‘Arresting Commercialization of Historic Residential Neighborhoods’. As an attempt to bridge the gap between theory and design, Smit thinks understanding the structure of built environment is an indispensable part- an ongoing quest which has resulted into a series of workshops called ‘Order in Built Environment’. Currently he is working at Ashvin Modi Architects, Bharuch and has been involved with studios and workshops at VDA.

Tapati Patel has completed his Bachelor in civil Engineering in 1996 and Master’s in 2010 with major as  Geotechnical Engineering from M.S. University. She had published papers during her dissertation work during her master and received an award for the same. She has also published handbook. “Ground Improvement Using Electro kinetics” in 2011. She is working as civil engineer from 1996 and engaged as faculty for couple of technical institute. She has done Diploma in Advance Computing (C-DAC) from  Pune. Tapati is currently engaged with teaching basic understanding of structures for junior students as well as advanced structural system for senior students.

He finished his diploma in Civil Engineering and is a part of VDA family since its many years now. Mukesh looks after the all the computational facilities at VDA. He coordinates the processes and camps for installing and supporting network hardware, software and applications on student computer devices. He maintains and manages the server systems, routers and the computer lab. Proficient in designing, planning and implementing LAN/WAN solutions, Mukesh also provides technical direction and supervision to the students and the faculty members. He is always available remotely and coordinates things on the go.

Pinal holds a master’s degree in Library Sciences, with a professional experience of over 8 years.
